The Desert Wolves were a band from Manchester that were floating around in the mid 80's, they were one of those bands that I've heard of but never really listened to.

So it turns out they were pretty fucking good! They have a great timelessness about them, whilst most pop songs get tired after a few listens, these songs sound great after 20 years!

PLUS the music from Devendra Banhart is pretty sweet too! A lot of people liken this dudes unique voice and singing style to Marc Bolan of T.Rex fame so check it!

And just to make today even better I found another song by Banhart which is a cover of Oasis' "Don't Look back in anger" which this video clip won some award for and this version even starts with a bit of John Lennon "Imagine" (apparently because Don't look back in anger is a tribute from Noel Gallagher to John Lennon)
Side note: Liam Gallagher actually thinks he is the reincarnation of John Lennon even though he was born before Lennon died...

According to Gee Wizz, Tennis is an indie band from Sydney who have been making a name for themselves by playing with the likes of Matt and Kim, The Ruby Suns and The Holidays.

They are also playing with Children Collide on the 19th of July at the Annandale in Sydney, so if your in the area you should defiantly check them out.

Spanish superblog Buffet Libre has invited us at Gee Wizz to take part in 'Rewind'. Rewind is an 80s music cover project, and they have invited many amazing contemporary artists to perform songs from that awesome era. Minitel Rose are a brilliant band from where else other than those Gallic shores, and of course, from our favourite stable (maybe equal with Italians Do It Better), majestic Valerie.

Their first release, entitled 'The French Machine', has dropped and has some great follow ups to 'Continue' and their Valerie Theme.

Almost like a French Klaxons, they have that same mystic edged rock from somewhere in the future that is mysteriously able to be traced back to historic influences (such as the rather Middle Eastern tinged Magic Powder).

Check out my faves below and make sure you buy buy BUY The French Machine! I'm not actually the biggest fan of what seems to be the upcoming single - Magic Powder, but there is much much more! I was supposed to post about these guys aaaaaaaaages ago when I saw them at a tiny gig in the back St Kilda cafe. But yeh I forgot... NOW thanks to Triple J (Australian Radio station) and my Wednesday morning peak time trek to uni, my memory has been jolted. This is because these guys were named finalists in the Triple J high school band competition. DON'T LET THIS PUT YOU OFF! (Cajun Dance Party are all still in high school!)

Initially I didn't want to like these guys, they just looked too professional and mature and I was sitting there thinking that someone needs to tell these fuckers that there not 25 and can't drive n shit. However once they started playing they blew my superficial misconceptions away. The lead singer channels Prince like a mad dog (even down to the purple velvet dinner jacket and cravat) and has really quite amazing harmony with the backup vox / lead guitar... and they are sooo tight the abreviation TTB can aptly be replaced with NeonLoveTB or NLTB without any problem.

So check em out and just see how good the local (there from Ballarat but you know it's sort of close) and young talent is.

The Psychedelic Furs were an English rock band that came to prominence in the late 70s and 80s with hits like Pretty in Pink (The song which inspired the film starring Molly Ringwald), and Love My Way.

They were 'art rock' in a time of punk rock. They were a bunch of emaciated Englishmen, a bit Bowie you might say, and their 1981 album Talk, Talk, Talk would stay their best, after they were pressured into releasing subsequent albums too hastily in the light of the success of the original Pretty in Pink.

The Dresden Dolls are a contemporary 'Brechtian punk cabaret' or alternatively 'theatrical rock' act, hailing from Boston. You might have heard their song 'Coin Operated Boy'.

Anyway, it seems they have developed a penchant for covering The Psychedelic Furs, which is pretty shmick because it doesn't match their usual vaudevillian style at all and is quite, well, nice. Here are a couple of their covers plus my favourite Dresden Dolls original - Missed Me.

Yes its been a while since I've done one of these, and this might be the last time so i may as well end it all with possibly one of my favourite bands form the 60's.

The Music Machine were an L.A band that formed in 1966, fronted by Sean Bonniwell (who is sometimes named the Godfather of punk). They Released their first able later that year with the single Talk Talk making it into the singles charts.

But after the release of the first album Bonniwell got rid of all the original band members and formed a new band named Bonniwells Music Machine, they released a self titled album in 1968 but did not reach the same commercial success of his the previous album.

Personally i think the second album is so much better.

I was working with JB tonight and the radio was whispering classics from Gold. Just as I was heading home comes on the lovely 'Talking In Your Sleep' by Romantics, which got me to stay groovin and jivin for a few extra minutes much to Jesse's delight.

It reminded me of an amazing compilation from a while ago that a friend introduced me to. It's by a dude I don't like at all - Armand van Helden. He's an absolute douche and his songs make me puke. Yet many of the classic songs he compiled for his New York: A Mix Oddyssey are brilliant, excluding his own tracks which he conveniently slotted in (puke).

The tracks are apparently a concoction representational of the New York night life scene - many styles, many eras. There is 80s, rock, dance punk, electroclash, pop, and whatever else. It features Blondie, Felix da Housecat, Yes, Soft Cell, and of course Romantics, along with a few slightly lesser known names. I don't post up enough made in Melbourne music, which is kinda gay. So I thought I would begin with an old favourite.

Boy+Girl (myspace) have been doing the rounds of Melbourne's independent music scene (Third Class, Ding Dong, Click Click, Roxanne, etc.) since 2006. The first time I saw them live was at Colours @ Miss Libertines and they were giving out badges. Shweet.

The indie/electro production would most likely not sound out of place on a Valerie roll call with their 80s influenced synths, though definitely more vocal orientated and less romance soundtrack than the French menagerie tend to be.

Did I mention that they've supported motherfuckers that go by the name of Justice, Busy P & Boyz Noize? The single off upcoming EP goes by the name of Shirley Temple, and they've also just completed a rad little remix of The Kings, another Melbourne band. Check it, and give them the love they deserve!

Bonjour. Gee Wizz were lucky enough to be included in tremendous French music and culture online hub Street Kiss's now famous World's Best Blogs Playlist.

At the beginning of the year they brought out the Early 2008 World Best Blog Playlist with entries from the likes of Kidz By Collette, Pardon My Freedom and Monsier P.

Vantastic Van She finally return to reckoning with a tune worthy of being called a tune by Van She!

Cat and the Eye, besides from being an odd departure from the components that made Van She so good in the beginning, was just plain ass.

Now there is Strangers. With a brilliant amalgamation of the sexuality and synth rock robustness of Kelly and Sex City, it captures a bang on sound.

It's not that we don't want the Van She sound to evolve at all, we just want it to be fucking good like we've come to expect. And Strangers is.

I woke up one day last week with my television on and a film about to start. Good timing. The film in question was Mike Myers 1993 'comedy' So I Married An Axe Murderer. Now whilst I was never going to put myself through the pain of watching the whole thing, the opening credits of the film is fantastic.

Why?

Because it features a cover of The La's classic 'There She Goes', by The Boo Radleys.

Bangers are dead, 2008 seems to be seeing the return of disco and one act that will be getting plenty of attention this year is Aeroplane.

A duo consisting of Stephen Fasano and Vito De Luca based in Belgium, expect to be hearing more from these guys!

Little Red Hail from Melbourne and over the past year have become quite popular nation wide, I remember when we first saw them play at Click Click well over a year ago when they were still making a name for themselves and they sure have come a long way since then!

But whilst browsing Hype Machine recently i noticed that no one has really blogged about them yet, and I'm not sure why.

So this post is going to be dedicated to our international readers as I'm positive most of local readers have heard all of these songs.

They have a great indie pop sound and at the same time remind me of the Beach Boys a bit.

I love Lauryn Hill. So does Obama. Whilst I'm not the biggest fan of Hip Hop, she has always made intelligent music in a creative manner. And this is one of my favourite lines of all time! Her Miseducation gets regular play, but her work on The Score in The Fugees is an all time fave. Not only does it include their amazing cover of Killing Me Softly, it also contains a cover of Bob Marley's 'No Woman, No Cry' and an illegal sample of an Enya's 'Boadicea' on the tune 'Ready or Not'. I went out and bought the soundtrack from Wes Andersons The Darjeeling Limited the other day and I was soooooo excited to find it in the 15th JB HiFi that I'd looked in for it! Yet after the 2nd song I was somewhat naively surprised to find a full on bollywood Indian song, and then another, and another and so on until you eventually run into some Kinks and one Stones song.

Now after investing 26 damn dollars into something I fully know I could have got off the net for free I bit my lip and freakin pushed on and to give it credit, after a bit of warming up, it's not too bad. So here's a little taste of my favorites from the generous 22 track album.

In Melbourne we are kind of an insular bunch in terms of the rest of Australia. Basically, Melbourne is better than anywhere else in Australia and we know it. So sometimes we tend to overlook great things from elsewhere. And these guys should not be overlooked.

The Dirty Secrets are a rocky-post-punkie quartet from Perth - not just that band that you had never heard of that superhero/crimefighter Miami Horror remixed in the not too distant past.

Their shows are as energetic as their music, and they are slowly making a name for themselves, which the releasing of their debut album will surely speed up.

Be one of the first in Melbourne to catch onto them by listening to these couple of tracks, then go to Pogo tomorrow night and see them play those very tracks! In Australia there are three numbers that you can dial EVEN IF YOUR PHONE IS LOCKED! When I found this out I was astounded. The first one is obvious - 000, the Australian emergency number. The 2nd one is 112, which, besides being an RNB group, is apparently an international emergency number which connects you to the nearest telephone signal when out of range. Seems logical enough. The 3rd one however, is 911. zomgwtfsrsly. Are we that Americanized that if we happen to be in an emergency, the first number we think to dial would be 9-1-1? Not only is it HARDER to dial (having to reach from 9 down the bottom all the way to 1 on the top of the pad wastes precious nanoseconds compared to pounding 0 three times), it is NOT the emergency number.

Anyway, French producer Danger has moved into remixing with his reworking of American Boys by Estelle feat. Kanye. Now this is the type of crossover that makes sense to me - from London to Cali to Paris. I bet they don't use 911 in France. Maverick will like this one, he's gangsta if you didn't know.

Pretty bad huh? Fortunately today you'll be glad to hear CFCF. The Montreal based magician aka Mike Silver has put his midas touch to a number of great songs, Health's Triceratops and The Teenager's Sunset Beach are a couple Gee Wizz have reported on, plus others from Justice, Spank Rock, The Jets (that song Aaron Carter covered), Crystal Castles and soon Heartsrevolution's CYOA (remixed almost as much as Club Action and Homecoming).

His dreamy synth got us googoo eyed after transforming Triceratops into a Night Rider theme styled epic, and his spaced out supposition has certainly got him in good stead in the near future as it begins to become more and more popular. Here at Gee Wizz we have a showbag of productions and remixes from CFCF, and whilst his name makes a bad report card, we give him an A+.

Only yesterday did I post about the wonderful Chromatics and the 'neu-Italo' stylings of the Italians Do It Better menagerie. Well after a taste of that comes an even bigger serving, this time from their associates from IDIB, Glass Candy.

The 'golden child' project of the collective, the duo consisting of Ida No and Johnny Jewel (also a contributor for Chromatics) combine their clean synth driven sound falling around the lusty yet abstract lyrics and intermediate yelps of No. Glass Candy are more disco and less haunting than Chromatics, with a sumptuous recapturing of Italo and Space Disco with a subtle modern twist.

This post is not out of the blue however, because Glass Candy, who like Flosstradamus are down in Aus for the V Festival, are also playing a side show in old Melbourne town, this one on April 3rd at The Toff In Town. They've been described as "one of the best live/dance bands out in North America" - iheartcomix, so it would be a tragedy to miss out on this one. Grab your tickets from Moshtix or from Modular asap!

Their album B/E/A/T/B/O/X was released last year, with 9 chillingly cool songs that will get you moving like it's 1982. Or 2082. Or like a robot. Or a seductive vamp. Or a robot seductive vamp from 2082.

Flosstradamus will be down in Australia for the V Festival. The V Festival heads down for the Melbourne leg on Saturday the 5th of April, and Flosstradamus is playing a sideshow at Third Class on the 28th of March!

Flosstradamus is of course CHI-town duo Autobot and J2K, part of the furniture at the iheartcomix stable. They blew up with Laffy Taffy, Girlie Rock with Kid Sister, and their remix of Matt+Kim's Yeah Yeah that we at GEE WIZZ included in our best of 2007. It's an exciting time to be these guys, touring all around the world and about to launch some brand new tracks onto the blogosphere, imagine the trim!

Flosstradamus know how to party; after setting up their own night and routinely selling it out without any advertising, it's obviously because of their quality. Hip-hop mashed with anything you can think of from acid rave to old time classics and the most obscure of obscure, sort of sounds like, well, Third Class. There ain't many chances to party like this in Melbourne, so get on it! Here is their latest remix, of my favourite ice cream pusher's Heartsrevolution's now blog classic tune.

For those living under rocks the past year, pretty much everyone's most anticipated album over that time span was D-R-O-P-P-E-D.

Cut Copy's In Ghost Colours (incredibly aptly titled, it somehow pinpoints the mise-en-scene of the album perfectly) was getting crazy hype, and deservedly so. To many aficionado's, it seemed that while a few of Australia's heavyweight electro-pop bands regressed with their sophomore efforts (Van She? Presets?) Cut Copy went from strength to strength. Following up to Bright Like Neon Love was never going to be an easy task, but bringing a more defined sound - losing some funk and gaining some 80s infused synth - has brought about a different flavour of disco. It's fresh, it's clean, it's awesome.

Hearts on Fire, So Haunted, and Lights & Music were released prior to the album, and gained plenty of momentum for the release. The trouble with that is, the rest of the album has to BACK IT UP, otherwise the multitudes of groupies will be left unimpressed. It's a testament to the Melbourne lads that there are a few other single worthy efforts on board here. Kudos for confidence, and kudos for quality. Here are a couple of previews for you.

When In Chrome...

Do as Chromans do? Or perhaps Chromatics? Though hype hasn't been a problem since Chromatics burst onto the scene, I just couldn't resist ensuring everyone has a taste of their sumptuous, somber sound.

Their album Night Drive (IV) has been haunting me since it was released last year. Which is lucky, because if I wanted anything to haunt me, it would be this. Akin to the soundtrack of some chillingly picturesque film noir mystery set in an Antonio Sant'Elia styled Italian Futurism scene, Chromatics have put together such a refined and austere glimpse of future-discopunk that despite it's down tempo ambiance, the sobering and icy subtleties demand that you do nothing except listen to it.

The Oregonian outfit of the Italians Do It Better coterie successfully crystallize an emotionally rigid yet somehow frail landscape that is more ponderous than party, more eloquent than energetic, more dark than delinquent, and most important, more great than good. School is out for Easter, and if you're as lucky as me, after being back only a few weeks, you have a weeks break! So what are you doing with your (Good) Friday off??? We have a brilliant idea for you... Recovering! (Something Macaulay's career never did.)

Because on (Great) Thursday night school is in for Melburnians, with Grafton Primary performing live at Pogo for us. The whole Gee Wizz crew will be down for a reunion after persuing our individual endeavours for a while, and you should be too! Use the Gee Wizz guestlist to make sure you're in, and in cheap. So onto the school in question - Grafton Primary. The lads from Sydney made a big splash on the blogosphere with their exceptional 'I Can Cook' (brilliantly remixed by Monsieur Horror as well, who is building up a huuuge repertoire of killer remixes, the newest being Fa Fa Fa). Their style is basically an amalgamation of all that was good in the eighties, with New Romantic and New Wave synth pop influences eminent.

I've never seen them live before, though I've heard they're quite the barnstorming live act, so do yourself a favour and join us there. And if you need more convincing (as if you do, we just like to spoil you), below are a couple more reasons why you should be going to Primary on your school holidays.

My friend told me to blog about a song. He likes the Crookers. So naturally, I poo-pooed his idea in a manner any kind friend would do, by calling him a fuckhead (definition of fuckhead: A person of poor judgment yet considerable enthusiasm. A fuckhead is generally stupid and persistent in his stupidity). Yet his insistence, in this case, was welcome as it actually was a decent song.

By the Black Kids, whose EP 'Wizard of Ahhhs' was/is widely available for free if you are smart enough to use a computer, this song is just a nice catchy tune to get your groove on to over and over. I've listened to the EP a few times and it's quite good, but the Twelves Remix of I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (song in question) takes the tune up another level, like all good remixes should do, making you think, "why the fuck didn't they just do it like this the first time?"

What are the biggest M's you can think of? Marlon Brando? Midnight Juggernauts? M83?

If you answered with the above three responses, then you would be correct. Midnight Juggernauts are stepping out on their March Farewell tour down Australia's East coast before they jet off to wow the rest of the world. And lucky for us, their 'support' act is another of the elite French ambient electronic acts (re: post on Air), M83.

As if by some divine intervention, the higher power you believe in must have had a quiet subconscious word to all the best French musicians and told them to finally get their Gallic asses to Melbourne! And just like Air, Daft Punk and the whole Banger crew before, M83 are not to be missed, especially for the much less expensive price of $35 + the Juggers! At the Forum in Melbourne on March 12th, you can grab a bunch of tickets from ticketek.

This is my favourite Midnight Juggernauts song, and whilst I don't always agree with the high degree of hype these guys get, Tombstone is a cracker.

At urbandictionary, an anorak is

We seem to think this Anoraak is quite terrific though. Part of the Valerie clan that Gee Wizz love and some around the blogosphere tip to be bigger than Banger, Anoraak is another artist inspired by 80's, lost love and melodic synths - a perfect formula in anyone's book.

We first got savvy on Anoraak a while ago with his remix of College's Teenage Color that left us yearning for more. And whilst we have heard a little more from a couple of their biggest proponents down at the esteemed discodust and hipsterrunoff (x2), we still want more!

Air are up there. They are, in my opinion, the premier French ambient electronic act, and have been so for the last decade - perhaps you could say the chill out version of Daft Punk. And finally, Air are coming to Australia for the very first time. Down for the V Festival, here in Melbourne they are playing a little side show at the Palais on Wednesday the 2nd of April.

You can get presale tickets from ticketmaster until 5pm tomorrow (special code 'amour') for $99, much better than the $128 you will have to fork out afterwards (you're welcome).

Though apart from the obvious oddities of leaving off Hummer, Mathletics and Astronauts and All, questions remain. What actually happened to this mysterious tune Electric Bloom (listed on Amazon as Electric Ballroom as well)?

It is good to see them release a truly complete and constructed album though, instead of a compilation of regurgitated, spasmodically released past demos, which seems to be the norm of late. Good for them! And rumour has it that "Hummer and Mathletics will be on the special edition CD which come with special remixes, live footage and other stuff."

For all my fellow Melburnians, Van She are playing at The Corner Hotel in Richmond tonight, showcasing their new shit.

For all you slowpokes out there you can still get tickets from Moshtix outlets or from The Corner itself, only a few left though so be quick! They are playing at 6pm for half an hour, which ain't too bad considering it's only 15 bones (+bf). They are also playing a tonne of gigs around Aus in the next few weeks so get your tickets early from Moshtix.

My favourite Van She gig was at the 2006 Modular x Tsubi Christmas Party at the Espy, where they played awesome live and more rockier versions of Kelly and Sex City. Ahh the memories.

I'm not a fan of their new single Cat & The Eye AT ALL though, so I'm not going to post up a DL, however check out the film clip for it, produced by talented Melbourne lads Krozm, whom we deejayed with at the Fashion Keyboard. It's interesting, to say the very least.

Greetings. Recently I have been harking back in history to peruse the precursors to many of the songs and styles that bring me aural delight in this day and age, just to keep me interested, as sometimes it can get rather tedious sifting through mountain ranges of music just to find a diamond in the rough (or two or three) to share with you all. So the next week is probably going to be a massive orgy of outrageously awesome OG space disco and italo disco classixxx, because I say so.

To kick things off we have one of the paradigms of prime cut Italo Disco. Basically, Italo Disco songs were simple, catchy and laden with vocoders and space age sounding synth, combined with nonsensical vocals in English by people who don't usually speak English, and when you could osmose a meaning from them, they typically centred around love, robots and space. This song was the epitome of it - it had it ALL.

It has recently been covered by Ear Pwr, a fresh sounding spaced out electro group hailing from the U.S who have done gigs with Crystal Castles, and definitely worth checking out! (I'm loving DiamondsLiquorLeather, with the lyrics "Jump up like Shaquille O"! OH SNAP!)

It's been a while since Mikey introduced me to The Bell and their great song I Am History. From that abundantly creative epoch of the earth which we call Sweden, these three boys make music that sounds just like I want music to sound.

Rock music these days is a hard act to pull off - just with the sheer amount of bands around it is difficult to stand out. Yet The Bell does, with an early 80s familiarity without a replication of it, and a sound which is extremely polished whilst never losing that certain mystery and edge that often diminishes proportionately to refinement.

Their album Make Some Quiet includes many awe inspiring songs that define The Bell's sound yet are diverse enough to each leave their own imprint, and to break the shackles thrown on by comparisons. Make Some Quiet was finally released in stores on February 12th, I think you should go grab a copy (here or here).

Valentines Day, whether you like it or not, is upon us. Maybe you're getting love, maybe you're getting lonely, at the very least you get to see a softer side of Gee Wizz! Here is one of my favourite songs ever, courtesy of the adorable Russian doll/songbird Regina Spektor.

When I was about 5 years old I used to go stay with my uncle and auntie and watch on repeat their taped copy of the 1949 version of the story Samson and Delilah (I was quite odd). Samson was so awesome and Delilah was such a bitch! How could he resist her oh so devilish charm! Oh, his sweetest downfall. Fast forward to just before now and Reggie Spek puts a personal spin on the tale, something that could only be described as perfect.

The Valerie clan are relatively new to me, they are a group of artists from France who have a damn cool blog that you can check out HERE.

The artists include Minitel Rose, The Outrunners, College, Anoraak and Maethelvin. Their music is totally 80's influenced and is a far sight better than all the other rubbish that is getting passed off as 'dance' music these days.

Pick Your Battles

FUCK! I almost forgot! Battles is playing at Billboard tonight in Melbourne. If you're not going, you have noooooo idea what you're missing out on.

Basically, the New York Math Rock / Post Rock / Future Funk / Instrumental / Experimental / just plain mental / just plain brilliant quartet of superb musicians in their own right have taken the world (my world at the very least) by storm since their debut full length album dropped on May 14th 2007. Voted one of the best albums of the year (and possibly the decade) EVERYWHERE.

Not for the lighthearted though, as Battles seem to have about 32972 different things going on in each song, their live show is bound to be a voyage to remember. Think of what a deranged circus performance would sound like. Check out if you can still get tix from moshtix sellers (listed here) or just rock up and hope you get lucky. Seriously, if this is the future of music, I like where it's going.

Adam Kesher is Gee Wizz's favourite band. The French artpop group have wiggled their way into our hearts with their perfect blend of rock and dance, managing to somehow stand out of the large field with an urgent, energetic, mental electro disposition.

Many of their songs have got the remix treatment of late, especially Modern Times (which we featured in our best tracks of last year) which is good as it gets them more exposure (especially in the blog age where you need a new remix every hour to stay on top of the pile), though it possibly leads to their originals not gaining as much fanfare, which is crazy, because they are crazy good! But not to worry, Gee Wizz have you covered.

They are currently embarking on their Happy Vandals Tour of UK, promoting the UK release of their Happy Vandals EP (buybuybuy), and we realllllly want to see them in Melbourne, Australia. teenagersintokyo are not teenagers, nor from Tokyo, but don't let their deceptiveness turn you off. What they are is an oh so hot band from Sydney. One of my favourite Australian bands that have rose to prominence in the last year, most of the time I don't buy into the hype that a lot of Aus bands get (most are way overhyped and riding on the coattails of the Aus flavour of the month hysteria that the world had/has), but these guys are fo' real. Every person who has heard their haunting tune Very Vampyr is compelled to break out into some crazy dance, and that's A-OK with me because I'm doing it too.

Put this down to the unexplainable. I've had these songs by UFO! for nigh on a year now, and only after stumbling upon them last week and playing them did I remember how awesome they were. I love the 'tude this dude has, the crude sexuality of these tracks reeks of a wannabe rapper, maybe 50 cent if he was white, weak, liked computers, was smarter and probably more likeable. Futurecop! makes music that could be from the past and future and anywhere that you're not. It evokes an aura from some fantastical planet unbound from time and space.

It is warm, yet strikingly cold. It is built on a hint of nostalgia, possibly a remnant of a childhood memory or from a film you watched oh so long ago. The white boy faux rap and electro project has taken them all the way to Park Life, James Tranter's 20th, and soon Big Day Out and Good Vibes, and as their repertoire expands, expect an EP in the near future (Gee Wizz Remixes?).

Our mate Bradaz' birthday could not have been celebrated any better with the surprise (for us, not for everyone) live act, considering at the BHP there's usually only shitstain cover acts. Last night was the first episode of the new English teen drama, Skins on SBS.
For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about this is the trailer for season 1...

Its probably going to be the coolest TV series this year, and even though season 2 is starting in the UK shortly, its better getting it late than never!

So we come to the last segment of the best of 2007 music. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

5. Friendly Fires - On Board (Nic Nell NTronica Remix)

British trio Friendly Fires are probably more well known for their tune 'Paris', but I think 'On Board' takes the cake - a marvelous concoction of dance and post punk. Nic Nell adds just enough of the colder glitchy tech element to compliment it rather than overpower it, and Gee Wizz does it work, combining with the vocals and bass line to form some sort of controlled chaos.

4. Late of the Pier - Bathroom Gurgle

Part of the great Moshi Moshi singles club (along with Friendly Fires - Paris), Bathroom Gurgle (produced by Erol Alkan) is like a Jekyll and Hyde song, managing to mix 80s synth pop in the same vein as Human League with a grand Rocky Horror Show finale. How you could not lose your b-a-n-a-n-a-s to such a song is inconceivable. A great sound that is bang on the money whilst still being original.

3. Foals - Hummer

If you are a Forward Russia fan like I am, you will love Foals (for some reason Foals have their own section on a Forward Russia forum, they just go together like peas and carrots). The dance punk-band have now built up an awesome portfolio of tunes, and Hummer, probably the most dance friendly of the pack, makes everyone stand up and notice/dance.

2. Scenario Rock - Perfect Love Antidote

Remember that old classic Skitzo Dancer? Well this is another classic from French duo Scenario Rock (aka Mehdi Pinson and Ludovic Therrault). The Justice remix of Skitzo Dancer gained cult status here in Australia, and the favour was returned as Mehdi Pinson laid down the vocals for Justice's DVNO. The brand new Perfect Love Antidote is slightly off kilter to the whole electro banger thing they had going with Skitzo Dancer, but that is just the thing that makes it sooooo great. They tell a great story through their tracks and their humour and style can turn any frown upside down. And don't forget the Hey Champ Remix, which stays true to the track (crap effort Bobmo) whilst delivering a more club friendly sound. Simply awesome.

How apt. This song was my ring tone until 11:50 pm on New Years Eve when I fucked my phone up carrying an esky from car to house. So this song sort of has to be number one for nostalgic purposes, regardless of quality. Though it wouldn't have been my ring tone if it were shit. Hrmmm.....

Who cares. It was totally the best song of the year.
